What Is Neoprene Hypalon Fabric?

Boat builders use neoprene-hypalon to coat fabrics for the tubes or compartments of inflatable boats. Manufacturers list the coated fabric as a neoprene-hypalon fabric. The components of neoprene and hypalon are both waterproof materials that, when combined, add extra durability and strength to the material.

The Material

  • Neoprene is a synthetic material, while hypalon is derived from rubber. The combination is used on high-end inflatable boats. The material may be coupled with a strong fabric that provides abrasion or tear resistance. High-end boats may use Kevlar or nylon for the tear protection along with the neoprene-hypalon used to prevent leaks. Neoprene-hypalon fabric is used in motor-powered crafts and rowboats.
